Laser Frostbiting at AYC
American Yacht Club races two different fleets during frostbiting season: the Laser Radial (ILCA 6) and the Cook11. Below is some basic information about the program. If you have any questions, please email ayclaserclass@gmail.com.
Basic Info
- The 2024-2025 season will kick off Nov 3, 2024, racing almost every Sunday until early April.
- You do not need to be a full AYC member to race with us, however you must be sponsored for a Special Frostbiting Membership. Please contact us at ayclaserclass@gmail.com if you are interested. Please share this page with anyone who you think might want to join us.
- Official scoring and prizes will be for the radial class only. However, sailors have the option to sail a 4.7 rig and be counted in the fleet.
- The season costs $400 for AYC members and $500 for Frostbiting Members. This includes storage of the boat on the club grounds.
- You do need to have your own boat. Charters are available from the Boat Locker.

Frostbiting Gear
Once the water gets cold, you will want to be in a drysuit and wearing dinghy boots. Make sure your boots are on the large size so that your feet (with socks and drysuit) are not cramped. Tights boots will make your feet cold! People wear a wide variety of gloves before it gets very cold, but the most used gloves once it does get close to freezing are the Showa 282 or 282-02 gloves.

The 4-day Cold Shoulder series is separate from frosbiting and immediately follows the end of the season. Participating Frostbiting members can keep their boat at AYC through the end of the Cold Shoulder.
